Collaborations with Chris Ferrie for his Baby University series
Chris Ferrie has a wildly popular series called Baby University where he tackles advanced concepts like Quantum Physics and Rocket Science and puts them into simple terms we all can understand. Every book in the core series uses the analogy of a ball to help describe the topic, so it’s a lot of fun to see how the ball concept is utilized each time. I’m so happy to announce a collaboration with Chris on four of the titles in the series. Take a look at them and be sure to check out all his other Baby University books! Baby Biochemist and Baby Medical School
Brave the Elements is also the home of The Baby Biochemist and Baby Medical School children’s book series! The recommended age range is 0-8. The books outline basic concepts of biochemistry to prime and inspire young children. They feature adorable, anthropomorphic biomolecules, cells, and microbes with simple explanations of important scientific concepts.

Bacteria and Antibiotics
Join us at Baby Medical School as we learn about bacteria and antibiotics, including a close look at penicillin and its mechanism of action, the principles of antibiotic resistance, and the effect of antibiotics on our microbiome. Don’t be intimidated! This book is made for babies through children in elementary school, but adults, students, scientists, and doctors will be sure to love it, too!
Learn about the molecular makings of vaccines in the second semester of Baby Medical School! Meet some members of our immune system and learn how they handle germs and vaccines to keep us healthy. This is a great gift for a new baby, to prep kids for their doctor visits.
The Doctor’s Visit
Teach and prepare your child for their annual physical exam with Baby Medical School: The Doctor’s Visit! You’ll not only learn about what will happen during the exam, but also WHY doctors take these measurements. Empower your child with knowledge so they can approach their doctor’s visit with courage and curiosity!
The ABCs of Biochemistry
The ABCs of Biochemistry is a fun, tongue-in-cheek tour of biochemistry using the letters of the alphabet. Each letter has a rhyme and full page illustration for the associated concept. This book is more for scientist parents to read to their babies, as some concepts in this book are not easy for children to grasp (gel electrophoresis, isotopic labeling, sequencing) but if you enjoy reading a book, then your kid will enjoy it, too! Mine does! Click on the image above to buy from Amazon.
The Baby Biochemist: DNA
The Baby Biochemist: DNA is an introduction to our cells’ instructions, specifically what DNA does, what it’s made of, and how it is stored in the nucleus! Clicking on the image above will bring you to Amazon.
The Baby Biochemist: RNA
The Baby Biochemist: RNA is all about the many jobs of RNA. It explains RNA’s role in making proteins, and also the regulatory and catalytic roles it can take on. This book uses the analogy of writing and editing a message to explain many of the things RNA can do. Click on the image above to buy from Amazon.
The Baby Biochemist: Proteins
The Baby Biochemist: Proteins describes how proteins are made and what they do. It features two proteins, myosin (which helps move your muscles) and rhodopsin (which helps you see), to illustrate the amazing abilities of these molecules. Clicking on the image above will bring you to Amazon to purchase. Don’t you just want to cuddle them?
The Baby Biochemist: Enzymatics
The Baby Biochemist: Enzymatics explores the world of enzymes and how they catalyze (or speed up) reactions. It explains concepts like reactions, catalysis, and even the transition state. Click on the image above to purchase on Amazon.
